Profile of the Laboratory

The Key Laboratory of Advanced Forming grew out of the Key Laboratory of Advanced Forming of Tsinghua University, which was founded in 2005 by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2007, it was formally established after passing the review by the Ministry of Education. Now, it is a cross-department scientific research platform, jointly built by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Materials and Engineering Science at Tsinghua University. The laboratory has an area of more than 7,500 square meters, and scientific research instruments and equipment with a net value of up to RMB 45 million yuan (300 units originally worth over RMB 100,000 yuan, and 15 units originally worth over RMB 1 million yuan). There are 70 permanent researchers, plus hundreds of doctoral students, master's students, postdoctoral students working in the laboratory every year. Many of the permanent researchers are supported by the National Scientific and Technological Talent Program and the National Overseas High-Level Talent Recruitment Program. Staying centric to the national strategic demands for advanced forming and the development frontier of the discipline, the laboratory has been concentrated on three main research directions: digitalization and intelligence of forming process, key technologies of major forming equipment, and innovative forming processes.
