The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) was founded in 1932 based on the principle of “Cultivating specialized mechanical engineering talents to meet the demand of domestic development.” That makes the DME one of the earliest departments in the field of engineering atTsinghua University.After structural changes of the DME in 1952 and 1960,the present DME was established in 2012 by uniting the faculty members fromthe former DME and the Department of Precision Instrument and Mechanics.
Based on the efforts of teachers and students from generation to generation, the DME has formed a complete discipline system covering mechanical design, manufacturing engineering and forming engineering. The DME has a basic researching and talent training platform such as the State Key Laboratory of Tribology and Demonstration Center for National Engineering Discipline Teaching,an international cooperation platform like the IDM Joint Lab and Overseas Expertise Introduction Center for Discipline Innovation, and a technological achievement transformation platform called Tianjin Research Institute for Advanced Equipment of Tsinghua University.
Facing international frontiers in each research field and meeting major national demands, research carried out at the DME covers a wide field, including mechanical interface fundament, robot and intelligent manufacturing, extreme non-equilibrium processing equipment and technology, bio fabrication and medical apparatus, as well as IC equipment and precision control, which have had great impact at home and abroad. The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tsinghua University recently ranked A+ in a nation-wide ranking, and on place 14 in the QS World University Rankings, 2020.
Based on the talent cultivating principle “Trinity” of Tsinghua University, the DME persists in cultivating the principle“Stable Foundation, Wide Coverage, Emphasizing Practice and High Quality", to enable outstanding innovative talents to master future developments in mechanical engineering.
